Choosing a wedding cake flavour

Gone are the days when it was a given that a wedding cake should be a dense fruit cake covered in marzipan and fondant. Like many wedding traditions, wedding cakes have evolved. With flavours ranging from carrot to red velvet and fillings from buttercream to ganache, the modern wedding cake as we know it, has come a long way since it's 18th century beginnings.

While this can be a good thing, it can leave couples with yet another decision to make, in what can seem like a never ending list of wedding related tasks.

What do you actually want?

Keeping it simple with tried and true flavours like vanilla & lemon means you can't go too far wrong in terms of catering to the tastes of your guests. Chocolate and carrot are also usually big crowd pleasers and popular among wedding guests.

Having said that, this is your wedding, and this is likely the most expensive cake you're ever going to buy, so if you want to take the opportunity to have only your favourite flavours now is definitely the time.

There is really no limit to the cakes you can choose and mixing and matching with different fillings can completely change the flavour of your cake and make it unique to your own personal tastes. For example a rich chocolate cake with a salted caramel filling is going to taste very different to chocolate with chocolate ganache. It's about finding the perfect flavour combinations for you and your day.

Why choose just one?

The best thing about moving away from tradition is that if you're having a tiered cake or cupcakes you really don't need to choose just the one flavour. Choosing several flavours means there will be something for everyone and you still have your favourite cake in the mix without worrying if anyone else will like it

Catering to dietary requirements

Considering the allergies/dietary requirements of your guests is always a good idea and now with all the different options available you don't need to sacrifice having the cake you want or exclude guests. Having separate cupcakes to cater to specific dietary requirements is a great way to be inclusive of your guests while still getting to have the flavours you want.

Choosing a flavour at Cherry & Black

Once you have booked with Cherry & Black, I provide you with a full menu of flavours. Approximately 6 months before your wedding, I will send your choice of up to 6 flavours & fillings to try free of any extra charge.

The cakes come wrapped separately so that you mix & match each cake with different fillings to choose your perfect flavour combo.

Some of my personal favourites include;

Lemon Drizzle with Lemon Curd & Lemon Buttercream

Carrot Cake with Vanilla Buttercream

Chocolate with Salted Caramel

Salted Caramel with Vanilla Buttercream

Coffee with Coffee Buttercream

Autumn Spice with Toffee Apple Curd & Vanilla Buttercream

Choosing a wedding cake can be a minefield, my personal advice would be if you choose a few flavours that you love, the chances are your guests will love it too. Remember, it's your wedding, so have your cake and eat it!
